She’s hilariously wily in the season premiere of her pal Courteney Cox’s sophomore sitcom, guest-starring as Glenn , a crunchy therapist who has client Jules (Cox) convinced she can solve all her issues.
Cougar Town picked up a couple of summer months later in last night’s season premiere “All Mixed Up” – and I was so very happy to have this touching, yet hilarious show back on the air! First of all, how can you not love the creators of this sitcom when they poked fun of their own name (Still Cougar Town)?! I was really pulling for the change all last season (eh, what’s wrong with the Cul-de-sac Crew!?), but wasn’t too disappointed in the greater forces that be when they added the Still to the title. Bravo! As we all highly anticipated, Jennifer Aniston did an excellent job of playing Jules’ batty shrink who has a “relationship” with her dog. It was a funny cameo , but I rather enjoyed it just because in real life these two are BFFs and for some reason the tune of My buddy fills my head (wherever I go, you’re gonna go…).
Busy Philipps told me at PaleyFest’s Freaks & Geeks reunion. But there is an additional twist to the story: You will be able to buy the penny cans using a number that will be said on the show, AND you might recognize the people who answer the phone. There’s going to be a real tie-in wh ere our fans are going to be able to buy penny cans, and [creators Bill Lawrence and Kevin Biegel] – even though I’m not suppose to say this – are going to give 300 away. There’s going to be a contest. And also, just so your fans know, the number that I say to call to order the penny can is going to be a real working phone number. And someone from the cast will have it at all times and answer it ,” she said.blowing my mind. “Yes,it’s going to be f-ing awesome. Bill asked me if I would be okay with having it for an hour, and I was like, ‘An hour?! I’m going to have it all week!’ I cannot wait.” Neither can we.
Season 2 has continued with that format, but has played around with it a bit. Jules’ son, Travis , has gone off to college, but reappears at home every couple of weeks. Jules has started dating her neighbour, Grayson. Most recently, the boat on which Bobby was living was destroyed. But these major plot points aren’t what I’d like to focus on. In fact, I wouldn’t really like to focus on anything, because the show doesn’t either. It makes no attempt to do so. With a sort of freewheeling joy , each episode tackles three or four plot lines, gleefully mixing and matching the characters. The humour ranges from slapstick to wordplay to dirty to political, with everything in between. Moreover, it’s actually funny. Some of the gags this season, such as the chocolate manatee from “The Damage You’ve Done,” have been totally outlandish , but it’s because they’re so out of left field that they’re hilarious.
