SHANGHAI , Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Super League side Shanghai Greenland Shenhua has announced that Nigerian international striker Obafemi Martins moved to the Chinese largest city from Major League Soccer's Seattle Sounders.
The former Inter Milan and Newcastle forward joined his new teammates for a training session in Jeju, South Korea in the morning, the club said on Thursday night in an official statement.
"Martins will reinforce Greenland Shenhua's attacking line and help diversify our methods to attack," said the club. "We hope he can put on an outstanding performance in the coming season and help the team achieve good result."
Martins, 31, announced his move on Twitter , saying he was looking forward to a "new challenge" in the Chinese Super League after spending three years with the Sounders.
"Something I feel strongly about is challenging myself. When I came to Seattle, it was for the challenge.
"For me it's now time for a new challenge. After significant reflection, I have decided to join Shanghai Greenland Shenhua FC of the CSL," Martins said in an emotional farewell letter.
Martins is the latest in a series of foreign footballers to be lured to China, which is making a concerted effort to attract overseas players to its top-flight league with jaw-dropping sums of money.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Xi Jinping's speech delivered Tuesday at the opening ceremony of the 86th Interpol General Assembly has been applauded by many overseas scholars and officials.
Speaking at the general assembly in Beijing, Xi said China hopes to work closely with countries and international organizations on global security, and jointly build universal security for humankind.
In order to beef up global law enforcement and security cooperation, Xi proposed the need to enhance reform and innovation , uphold the rule of law and seek mutual benefits. The Chinese president also vowed stronger support for Interpol in the next five years to raise its global influence and leadership.
Xi's speech at the Interpol meeting showed that China, faced with new challenges in the 21st century, is ready to be a cooperation partner and play a decisive role, said Fernando Reyes Matta, former Chilean ambassador to China.
Xi's speech had two major messages. The first one is that China aspires to forge close cooperation with other nations so that it could be more efficient in dealing with security issues, said Reyes , who is now director of the Latin American Center for Chinese Studies at Andre Bello University.
The second is that China hopes to share its experience and knowledge on security with other countries to help them improve national security and stability, he said.
Reyes added that Xi's pledge to support Interpol is a sign of how China views its role in an emerging new world order.
Bo Zhiyue, a professor of Chinese politics at the Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, said China, with growing national strength, has made more and more contributions to international law enforcement security cooperation in recent years.
The professor said countries around the world need to strengthen bilateral as well as multilateral dialogue and attach importance to the role of international organizations such as Interpol.
In his speech , Xi expressed China's good will and willingness to strengthen international law enforcement cooperation and safeguard world security and stability, said Bo, the founder and president of the Bo Zhiyue China Institute.
Though difficulties remain in the implementation process, the international law enforcement cooperation has in recent years made great progress in the fight against terrorism and corruption, Bo said, adding that China's active participation will help promote the development of global security governance.
Wilson Cacuango , an officer from Interpol's National Office for Ecuador in Quito, said the comprehensive, cooperative and sustainable global security concept put forward by Xi is very timely, in the context of growing economic globalization and transnational crimes.
It is imminent for law enforcement agencies worldwide to strengthen cooperation and Ecuador expects China to play a leading role in promoting global security governance, Cacuango said.
Ecuador believes that Interpol is an important platform for police around the world to carry out law enforcement cooperation as well as an effective means for countries to combat transnational crimes, Cacuango added.
He said the economic and trade cooperation between China and Ecuador becomes increasingly closer , and satisfactory results have been achieved in their joint efforts in combating transnational crimes and drugs.
He said China has a strong advantage in technical equipment, noting that Ecuador's ECU 911 system, an integrated system of police services and video surveillance built by China, has played a key role in effectively preventing and combating various kinds of crimes.
Ecuador hopes that China will make more efforts in helping the country improve its law enforcement capability, Cacuango added.
